Since the 1970s the Portuguese painter Pedro Calapez is intensively and consequently occupied with exploring painting and its connection and impact on space. The artist approaches places, sites, rooms and transforms them by arranging and installing his artworks in situ. Working on and with different materials, such as metal and wood, his installed paintings are emerging from the space and are immediately reacting on the site itself, by strongly claiming it. The artist’s fascination of finding new forms and a playful investigative interaction with colour, determines Calapez forceful approach on painting and shaped his artistic history.
