Born 1957 in Antwerp, Belgium – lives and works in Brussels, Belgium
The Belgian artist Jan Lauwers has worked with various media, strongly cross-fields and has created a versatile body of work as a solo artist. In 1986 he founded “Needcompany” a multidisciplinary and multilingual collective, that creates on the interface of theatre, dance, performance and art. In collaboration with Grace Ellen Barkey, Lauwers functions as the artistic director and directed numerous performances, videos and films. From 2009 until 2014 Needcompany held an artist in residence program at the Burgtheater in Vienna. Lauwers was honored with the “Decoration of Honour in Gold for Services to the Republic of Austria” in 2012 and in 2014 with the “Golden Lion Lifetime Achievement Award” at the Venice Biennial, for his pioneering work in the field of theatre.
